Xu Yicong, the former Chinese ambassador to Cuba, said in a recent Beijing Daily article that the decision by China and the United States to avoid a trade war is in line with the development of the global economy and conducive to the global trade order.
People have every reason to cheer, he said, adding that trade between the world’s two largest economies holds magnificent meaning to the world economy.
When the US announced its plan to impose tariffs on Chinese products, which provoked China to hit back, the world supported China on the principle of anti-unilateralism, Xu said.
As the US started the conflict unilaterally, China’s stance has been firm: It rebutted the US’ ungrounded allegations while showing the will to fight to the end, kept the door of negotiation open, and sent the president’s special envoy to Washington for talks after both sides achieved initial consensus, creating the basic conditions for defusing a trade war, he added.
