Survey: Sharp fall in Chinese wanting to work abroad
Updated: 2018-06-27 15:26
The percentage of Chinese people who are willing to work abroad has dropped by half compared to that of four years ago, according to a report released on June 25 by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
The report, Decoding Global Talent 2018, suggested that 33 percent of Chinese citizens were inclined to consider a foreign work assignment, down from 61 percent in 2014. Respondents interviewed in the survey expressed the view that China had become an innovator in many areas, which has made it unnecessary for Chinese people to move abroad to advance their careers.
In addition, the overall willingness to relocate for work has declined worldwide, decreasing from 64 percent in 2014 to 57 percent in 2018. Political stability affects the motivations to work abroad, according to the report.
The report was based on a survey of labor trends and work preferences covering 366,000 people in 197 countries jointly conducted by BCG and online international recruitment company The Network. The number of Chinese respondents in the survey was 23,389.
