Comprehensive ties open new doors for China, Russia

On September 28, a seminar on “new opportunities for Belt and Road Initiative and new development of Sino-Russian relations” was held in Beijing by the Russian Research Center of Renmin University of China–St. Petersburg State University.
This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping. As China's largest neighbor and comprehensive strategic cooperative partner, Russia has played a vital role in the promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative, said Chang Xuhong, counselor of the Department of European-Central Asian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He stressed that economic and trade cooperation between the two sides witnessed a constant rise, "in the first eight months of this year, the bilateral trade volume reached $67.5 billion, increasing by 25.8 percent year-on-year, and is expected to reach $100 billion for the whole year. "
Since the two head of states agreed to promote China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination to higher level in 2014, a slew of consensus have been reached in many areas, in particular agriculture and education, said Liu Jianqing, director of the Europe and Asian Division of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges, Ministry of Education, adding that the Russian Research Center is just the fruit of the cooperation.
Igor Pozdnyakov, first secretary of the Russian Embassy in China and representative of the Russian Federation's Ministry of Education in China, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Russian Research Center for its work in promoting Russian culture, and hoped that exchanges between the two countries in culture and education could reach a new level in the future.
"Cultural and educational cooperation is part of the strategic cooperation between China and Russia. About 18,000 Russian students are now studying in China and about 30,000 Chinese students are enrolled in Russian universities."
Experts from cultural and economic circles have full, active discussion on topics like the construction of Belt and Road Initiative in Central Asia, the Sino-Belarusian Industrial Zone and the role of Shanghai Cooperation Organization within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.
