Foreign ministry: China stands on its own two feet

The development of any country fundamentally depends on its own efforts, and as a country with nearly 1.4 billion people, China’s development cannot rely on the alms and gifts of others, the Foreign Ministry website quoted the ministry spokesman Lu Kang as saying. Indeed, no country has the strength to “rebuild” China, Lu said.

Recently, US leaders have repeatedly said the US has generated a huge trade deficit with China over the past 20 years, and that this is tantamount to the US “rebuilding” China. The accusation is neither fair nor reasonable, Lu said.

The US trade deficit with China is the result of many factors, determined by the comparative advantage of China and the international division of labor, Lu said, and the US has imposed long-term restrictions on the export of high value-added products to China.

A study unveiled by Deutsche Bank in June said the US was a net commercial beneficiary of trade with China, but that economic and trade collaboration benefited both.
