Xinhua: US must stop making waves in Taiwan Straits

A recent comment by US Vice President Mike Pence on the Taiwan issue, part of an aggressive speech against China, was illogical and absurd, and sent the wrong signal to secessionists in Taiwan, Xinhua News Agency said.

Pence accused China of threatening the stability of the Straits by establishing diplomatic relations with three Caribbean and Latin American countries, which was an attempt to cause trouble concerning China’s core interest.

It was based on the one-China principle that Chinese and US leaders managed to normalize bilateral relations in the 1970s. Over the ensuing decades the one-China principle has become a common understanding throughout the world.

Today when other countries establish diplomatic ties with China based on the one-China principle, Washington throws around accusations instead, a typical example of applying double standards and playing power politics, Xinhua said.

The US has chosen to ignore facts and to bring up groundless and unwarranted accusations against the mainland, it said.

“The world needs sound, steady, and sustainable China-US relations. US politicians should play a constructive role in these relations instead of being a troublemaker in cross-Straits peace and stability.”
