Accelerating the process of substantive consultation on the East China Sea issue is crucial for the steady and long-term growth of China-Japan relations, according to Jin Yongming, director of the China Ocean Strategy Studies Center at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.
After years of efforts, China-Japan relations have overcome the sluggish progress made since September 2010, and have recently returned to a normal track, as evidenced by the mutual visits of Chinese and Japanese leaders to each others' countries.
Among the most positive results: China and Japan have reached consensus on further communication and consultation on the resumption of negotiations regarding the principled consensus between the two countries on the East China Sea issue (June 18, 2008) and the deepening of the maritime and air liaison mechanism in the East China Sea, Jin said.
