Regional integration in the Yangtze River delta needs further development

Dozens of experts gathered in Beijing to discuss the future development of the Yangtze River Delta as research on the level of the high-quality integrated development of the region was published in Beijing on April 2.
The report was compiled by two scholars at Nanjing University’s Yangtze Industrial Economic Institute. And it analyzes the integrated development situations and problems of various aspects including the exchange of goods, the ecological environment and public services in the Yangtze River Delta. And it also gives suggestions on promoting regional integrated development, which were discussed by the scholars present at the release of the report.
Wang Zhen, the vice-president of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, said that deepening the reform, developing the opening-up on a wider scale and narrowing regional difference are missions for the high-quality integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta.
Wu Xiaohua, the vice-president of the Macro Economic Institute of the State Development and Reform Commission, said that regional coordination is a feature of the area’s high-quality economic development.
The Yangtze River Delta covers 26 cities including Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Hefei. And this area has advantages as an advanced economy with convenient transportation and close cultural exchanges.
In 2018, President Xi Jinping said that the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta should be strongly supported and upgraded to a national strategy.
Hong Yinxing, the honorary chair of the Yangtze River Delta Economics and Social Development Research Center of Nanjing University, pointed out that managing relationships between Shanghai and other cities in the area was essential to the implementation of the regional integration.
In the view of Liu Zhibiao, a professor and dean of the Yangtze Industrial Economic Institute of Nanjing University, in order to better develop the region, government should give more freedom to the private sector.
Other experts agreed that scientific and technological innovation is of great importance for regional development.
Liu said that building of a scientific and technological innovation center with global influence was an important goal of the Yangtze River Delta.
Zeng Fanyin, the dean of the Anhui Academy of Social Sciences, said that Shanghai should keep pace with its neighboring Anhui province in the field of scientific and technological innovation as there are a large number of universities and scientific research institutions in both Anhui and Shanghai.
And establishing a community of innovation would be useful to developing scientific and technological innovation and regional integration.
