In the fall of 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping traveled west to Kazakhstan and south to Indonesia, and proposed major initiatives -- the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road. The two proposals have morphed into the Belt and Road Initiative, which has attracted global attention as a unique platform for building a community with a shared future for mankind.
Since then, the Belt and Road Initiative has made significant progress and notched up key achievements. During the process, China Daily has been actively promoting the initiative in various forms, by initiating an international discourse, bridging the international communication deficit and inviting journalists from countries along the BRI to take a close look at China and better understand the initiative.
There is now a widespread recognition and understanding of the BRI as scholars, entrepreneurs, officials and statesmen worldwide join the debate.
The second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation isChina’s major diplomatic event this year. In 2017, the first forum, with the theme "strengthening international cooperation and co-building the 'Belt and Road' for win-win development", was held in Beijing. It was attended by 29 heads of state or government, the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Chairman of the international committee of the Red Cross. About 1,500 VIPs from more than 130 countries were official representatives.
Common Prosperity: Global Views on Belt and Road Initiative
Leveraging our expertise and international communication channels, China Watch, a communication-led think tank powered by China Daily, in cooperation with China International Press, will add to the great significance of the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation by publishing a book, Common Prosperity: Global Views on Belt and Road Initiative.
With about 50 opinion pieces divided into five chapters: policy coordination, facilities connectivity, unimpeded trade, financial integration and people-to-people bonds, top global opinion leaders including, Ueli Maurer, president of the Swiss Confederation and head of the Federal Department of Finance, Dominique de Villepin, former prime minister of France, Wolfgang Schüssel, former chancellor of Austria, and Suma Chakrabarti, president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development share their views and observation on the BRI.
From different angles, they analyze how to build a more open and efficient international cooperation platform, build a closer, stronger partnership network through consultations to meet the interests of all and push for a more equitable, reasonable and balanced international governance system under the guidance of openness and inclusiveness, cooperation and mutual benefit.
In an ever-changing global order, we face great challenges; and in pooling human intelligence and competence to solve global problems and seek further development, the vision of the BRI and the notion of a human community with a shared future is of extraordinary significance.
