Health is key to realize the Chinese Dream, Li Ling, a professor at the Peking University’s National School of Development, said at the 27th National Reality Lecture held in Tsinghua University.
She has pioneered the concept of “Healthy China”.
Exploring a new development pattern that is centered on health and well being is new mode for modernization in the new era, Li said.
A hundred years ago, China was a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society in which people suffered greatly. As we approach the 70th anniversary of new China’s founding and have recently commemorated the 100th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement, China is moving into a new era.
Life expectancy has increased drastically from 45 years old in 1958 to 68 in 1978, with a growth rate of 1.8 percent a year, which exceeds the total of India’s and Mexico’s.
Although China, India and Mexico are all developing countries with more than 100 million people, their economic development differs greatly.
China’s super-rapid growth can not be explained commonly. The secret to China’s economic miracle is human capital. Life expectancy has a positive correlation with economic growth.
People’s living standards have improved dramatically, Li pointed out.
We do not need to worry about the trade war. It is the United States, not China, that is like a cat on a hot tin roof. The imposition of tariffs is a reflection of China’s national strength. We should remain calm and hold firm, said Li.
China is now exploring a development path that improves human health according to our circumstances. The next innovation is embarking on that development path that serves us. Accordingly, China is paying attention to changing times and refuses to blindly follow others.
We should use IT and smart technology to generate innovation in a “digital China”, and pursue harmony between humans and nature.
A large online population is our unique advantage. It presents a clear network effect.
A dispersed market does not benefit information collection. Big data offers practical assistance to developing “healthy China”.
Free medical care nationwide will become a reality, as long as we sustain technological development, laws and institutions.
We should establish a social-governance model based on collaboration, participation and common interests, addressed by Li.
