The Institute of Area Studies, Peking University hosted the seminar “Asian Civilizations, Mutual Learning and China” on May 15 to enable scholars from Asian countries to exchange ideas. Experts discussed how Asian civilizations can learn from each other and build a community with shared future.
“The two-day discussion of Dialogue of Asian Civilizations will definitely benefit all the participants. Because China is rising, it’s very necessary for us to know more about our neighbors and the whole world.” said Zhai Kun, deputy director of the Institute of Area Studies, Peking University.
Syed Hasan Javed, director of Chinese Studies Centre of Excellence in the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Pakistan, said that China’s rise is, of course, recognized by some people as an excellent development. Others do not understand China’s rise or even doubt its benefits. This may be because their unawareness of Chinese culture, values and civilization.
“China needs to think about how to contribute to a new paradigm for international cooperation. China, Asia and the globe all need to think about the new paradigm.” he added.
Mario Kozah, director of the American University of Beirut’s Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies, said the ancient Silk Road provides a wonderful example of how trade can benefit cultural integration and how civilizations can learn from sharing experiences and interactions.
The Silk Road is not only a trade route but also a road for religion and culture, through which other peoples, including those from Muslim and Christian cultures, reached China. “From the experience of the Silk Road, we can see the good outcome of the trade is highly possible,” Kozah said.
“Trade doesn’t seem necessary to bring conflicts and dominance to other economies.”
This conference shows China’s outlook. Professor Zhai Kun concluded that the conference actually shows China’s attitude. China wants all Asian countries to know that it is a friendly country. There are so many cultures from which China can learn. The conference title demonstrated that China does not emphasize its soft power but rather Asia’s soft power.
